Selected Fieldwork

Mapping Biodiversity and Analyzing Occupancy of Big Cats in Bolivian Amazon Summer 2019

Sponsoring Institution: Wildlife Conservation Society | Grant and gear sponsor: Fjallraven North America

Researcher focused on 1) mapping biodiversity by establishing and leading transects 2) placing camera traps and searching to record secondary signs of jaguars and ocelots such as tracks and scat. 3) Environmental journalist interviewing local scientists and indigenous community members. Data used for my studies at Columbia University on effects of loss of biodiversity on ecosystems, and the data was contributed to Wildlife Conservation Society for baselines and trends of ecosystem functioning. A short documentary video was branded by Fjallraven and will be marketed across their platforms to educate the general public on the importance of protected areas.

Mapping Biodiversity in Cuba October 2018

Sponsoring Institution: Wildlife Conservation Society

Biodiversity researcher focused on transects for herpetology studies. Contributed data to Wildlife Conservation Society to establish ecological baseline for the protected area. “The mountainous forests of Lomas de Banao Ecological Reserve and the fresh wetlands of Tunas de Zaza Wildlife Refuge are home to species only found in the Caribbean—including the vulnerable Cuban Parakeet and the near threatened Cuban Amazon Parrot. This is a critical moment in history for this island nation, with the potential for significant economic development around the corner.” (EarthWatch)

Lake Sibinacocha Expedition May 2018

Sponsoring institutions: Denver Zoo | Gear Sponsor: Fjallraven North America

Environmental researcher focused on mapping biodiversity at extreme elevation and also, environmental journalist chronicling the research for a feature story. My feature was published in United’s in-flight Hemispheres Magazine as Cat’s Cradle: The Search for the Andean Feline. “High in the Peruvian Andes lies the Cordillera Vilcanota, and at its heart is the Sibinacocha watershed. This fragile ecosystem, with its dramatic landscapes and incredible biodiversity, is at a crossroads. Rapid climate change, mining, and uncontrolled tourism threaten both its biological and cultural diversity. Our research, ranging from baseline biodiversity surveys to understanding how the ecosystem responds to a changing environment, is key to establishing critical conservation programs to protect this land and its people.” (Sibinacocha Watershed Project)

Shetab Afghanistan October 2016

Sponsoring institutions: the Unreasonable Institute

Instructed growth stage small businesses on communications and strategic partnerships. Published This Is What It’s Life For Female Entrepreneurs in Afghanistan for Fast Company and Picking up the Pieces in Kabul for the Observer. Kabul’s first incubator supporting private sector growth for social ventures. I traveled to Kabul to investigate the private sector at a crucial moment when international funding dwindled and most NGOS and foreign troops pulled out.

Global and East Africa Unreasonable Institute Frequent travel in 2014-2016

Sponsoring instituions: NGOs, World Bank, local governments (depending on project)

Investigative researcher focused on mapping solutions to environmental crises. Produced written and filmed content for major outlets focused on entrepreneurs solving global problems such as energy and food production, rural healthcare, corruption, and access to water. Unreasonable Institute unites entrepreneurs with the potential to address major problems at scale. I began to report on global affairs as a field correspondent for the Unreasonable Institute, an organization focused on promoting peace and security through social enterprise. I investigated solutions to the world's most pressing problems and gather voices spanning many histories and geographies.
